Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary- In1801 Oster and its county had 39 Christian merchants, Jewish

merchants don't appear; Christian petty bourgeoises were 287; Jewish petty bourgeoises 38. In the 1847 audit of the

county there was one " Jewish society" with 633 souls. In the census of 1897 there were 150 thousand residents in the

county, from them 6,359 Jews. in Oster. there were 5,370 inhabitants, amongst which were 1,596 Jews.
